What does it cost to charge an electric car in Sweden?

Enter your mileage and your electricity price. You will see what charging costs per month, per mil and per year — and how that compares with the petrol car you drive today.

Ordering a Tesla? The referral has to be on the order before you submit it — here is how the referral works.

Fuel only. No road tax, no insurance, no servicing and no depreciation — those differ between the two cars as well, but they do not belong in this comparison.

The rest is counted as Supercharger.

Including the grid fee, energy tax and VAT — not the spot price. 1,70 is an average for Swedish households: spot price about 0,40 + supplier margin about 0,05 + energy tax 0,36 + variable grid fee about 0,55, plus VAT. Southern Sweden pays more than the north. Clear the field if you would rather see a range.

3,50 is my estimate of a Swedish average, not Tesla’s price list. Tesla prices every Supercharger separately and the price moves through the day — if the app shows you something else, the app is what counts.

18 kWh/100 km year-round, measured at the wall socket — not from the car’s display. Swedish Model Y owners report around 14,8 kWh/100 km over a summer, winter is worse, and charging loses some energy on the way into the battery. That is why the figure here is higher than the one you see in the car.

What 1 000 km free Supercharging gets you

Order a new Model Y or Model 3 through a referral link and you get 1 000 km of free Supercharging. At your Supercharger share above, that goes this far.

If you mostly charge at home it comes to a small number of months, and that is the whole point of working it out: the benefit is worth more to someone who drives far and charges on the road than to someone who charges in the garage.

The value is what the same charging would have cost at a Supercharger. If you charge at home instead it would have cost less, and then the real saving is lower.

Common questions

Is an electric car cheaper to run than a petrol car in Sweden?

On fuel, yes, with the figures this page uses: 464 kr/month against 1 613 kr/month, so 13 788 kr a year in difference. That is fuel only — road tax, insurance, servicing and depreciation differ as well and are not included here. Change the figures in the calculator and you get the comparison for your own driving and your own car.

How much more does the car use in winter?

Reckon on a quarter to a third more when it is cold. Swedish Model Y owners report around 14,8 kWh/100 km over a summer, and in real cold it climbs towards 25 kWh/100 km. To see a winter month on its own, type 24 in the consumption field instead of 18 — the figure above is an average across the whole year.

How much do I save charging at home instead of at a Supercharger?

At 15 000 km a year and the prices in the calculator, charging entirely at home costs 4 590 kr per year, and entirely at a Supercharger 9 450 kr. The difference is 4 860 kr per year, and that is the sum a home charger has to be weighed against.

Why is the consumption higher than the figure shown in the car?

The car shows what left the battery. The electricity bill charges for what went into it, and charging loses some on the way. So I use 18 kWh/100 km measured at the wall socket, while the car’s display shows a lower figure.

If you are going to buy the car

The calculator above needs no data from Tesla and works whatever happens to the referral programme.

If you are going to order, I also work out what the car costs to buy — in cash, on a loan, or with the money invested.

The referral has to be on the order before you submit it. There is no code to type in; the link is the whole mechanism.
